The club were originally known as Grimsby Pelham F.C. in honour of the Pelham family who were prominent landowners in the area.
It came into being at a meeting held at the Wellington Arms in September 1878.After only a year the club was renamed Grimsby Town.
They turned professional in 1890 with their first League game coming as founder members of Division Two in 1892 with a 2-1 victory over Forthwith Victoria.
Despite its name the club actually plays in Cleethorpes.
