His first season of professional football brought him 3 months on loan with Huddersfield Town where he struggled to make amends making only 3 league apperances for the Terriers. The following season Harkins made only 5 apperances this time on loan with Bury and last season he spent a month with League One club Blackpool where he played 5 times and scored two goals. However Gaz never impressed enough to be wanted by Blackpool Player/Manager Simon Grayson.
Graham Rodger made the Rovers reserve skipper one of his first signings, but Gaz has struggled to get in the side as of late down to the Ricky Ravenhill and Danny Boshell signings.
