Coyne for Grimsby!
Welsh International Danny Coyne signed on a permanent deal from Tranmere Rovers at the start of the 1999/2000 season on a free transfer.

Coyne was signed as replacement for Aidan Davison who had moved to Sheffield United when his contract ran out. From the moment Coyne arrived at Blundell Park it was obvious that he was going to be a trust worthy goalkeeper, but we did not expect him to improve in the way he did.

In my view, we could of easily been relegated from Division 1 if it was not for the on form Coyne in goal, Danny picked up two Player Of The Season awards from the club for the 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 seasons.

The most memorable match in my eyes for Danny was his outstanding and amazing peformance in the 2-1 away win at Liverpool in the League Cup 3 years ago. Coyne kept a bombardment of shots out with ease, and it is not hard when you have Litmanen,Smicer,Heskey,Barmby,Murphy and Hammann smashing shots in at you all the time.

In the 2003/2004 season Danny moved to Premiership side Leicester City as the back-up keeper for England International Ian Walker, he played 3 or 4 Premiership games, 1 of them 40 minutes against Manchester United after Walker was taken of injured.

Leicester were relegated at the end of the year, and Coyne had the choice of either staying as a number 2 keeper for Leicester or being the number 1 keeper at fellow Championship side Burnley. Danny chose Burnley where he is yet again regarding as a fantastic keeper and has done his all this season for the Claret and Blues. However injury has hampered his progress in the past few months and he has been forced to sit on the sidelines while number 2 Brian Jensen keepers his gloves warm for him.

A true Grimsby cult hero, a fantastic unforgetable 4 years at Blundell Park.

There was a recent rumour that Coyne may return to Blundell Park, on loan to gain his fitness back, but I somehow would doubt whether this great would want to return to Blundell Park, both player and club have aged since and have stretched so far apart.
