Peter For Grimsby!
Versatile defender who joined from the youth ranks back in 1992. Got a cool head and is inteligent. Scottish defender Peter Handyside is definelty a cult hero at Grimsby after serving The Mariners well all the way up to his exit at the end of the 2000/2001 season.

Made a fantastic partnership with Mark Lever at centre back in his time here at Blundell Park. And commanded the back well, was virtually unstoppable in 97/98 with Aidan Davison behind him and Mark Lever,John,McDermott and Tony Gallimore next to him.

Peter was a Scottish U21 International however he failed to pick up any intrest from playing in the main National squad.

Handyside never failed to deliver at Blundell Park and despite being very injury prone, sometimes spending months on the sidelines he always seemed to come back much stronger than he went in. His experience rubbed off on Chinese International Zhang Enhua who was on loan for 3 months and despite Enhua being the captain of his country at the time he did learn a few bits and bobs of Handyside.

Peter moved to Stoke City on a free transfer in July 2001 following manager Lennie Lawrence`s unsuccesful bid to keep him for a further season. Hanyside found himself the skipper at the Britania Stadium and led them out on several occasions against The Mariners.

In August 2003 Peter was released by Stoke boss Tony Pulis, and despite a link with The Mariners he chose to join rivals Barnsley along with fellow former mariner Tony Gallimore who had just been released by Grimsby.

Peters injuries got worse and the player did not play that much at all last season, Handyside made 31 apperances for Barnsley last season and spent some of the campaign on the sidelines. At the end of the season both Town rejects Handyside and Gallimore were released.

Yet again linked with a return, Russell Slade saw no intrest in Peter and so he joined Nationwide Conference National strugglers Northwich Victoria. So far Handyside has kept of the injury list but has not kept his club from slipping down to the bottom of the league. Peter Hanyside however is a true Grimsby great.
