If Italy fail to beat Azerbaijan and the Welsh win their game, they will go to Portugal as group winners.

With Italy hot favourites to win their game, Barnard and co are likely to be in the play-offs.

It was thought at first that Barnard could join up with his team-mates in Brighton after national manager Mark Hughes indicated he wouldn't be used.

Key injuries have forced Hughes to delve into his squad though, with 'Barney' now set to play in one of Wales' biggest games in modern times.

"He's going to play for them, going to start, and that's great news for Barney," Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph having just spoken to Hughes.

"If you're going to lose somebody you'd rather lose them to international duty. It's a great positive for him and the club."
