Injuries caused Wales boss Mark Hughes to play Barnard in his prefered left back slot with Gary Speed moving into midfield.

Barnard had a steady game as the Welsh crashed to a suprise 3-2 defeat that means they will now go into Monday's play-off draw. Italy's victory over Azerbaijan meant that even a victory would not have resulted in automatic qualification for Hughes' men.

With an Azerbaijan victory very unlikely, Hughes opted to change his formation to a 4-3-3.

Former Mariner John Oster was named as a sub for the game and came on in the 88th minute for Cardiff's John Robinson.

Wales could now meet Scotland in the play-offs with Slovenia, Norway, Latvia, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Croatia, and Russia also in the draw, which will be made at 11:15 on Monday morning.
