Clatenburg established himself as a grade A prat amongst Town fans in February 2002 for failing to send of Stockport's Dave Challinor, after a disgraceful tackle/assult on loan striker Martin Pringle. The Swede's leg was badly broken and that tackle ultimately led to his retirement from the game.

Clattenburg was aware of the challenge as he booked Challinor, however despite Pringle leaving on a stretcher and having his leg smashed to pieces, it was deemed not a sending off offence.

The following January and Clattenburg returned to Blundell Park to referee the Bradford game. Approaching half-time Town were leading 1-0 thanks to a
Michael Boulding goal early on. Steve Livingstone was then sent off by Clattenburg after Bradford defender Robert Molenaar fell about on the turf.

Video evidence showed that Livvo made no contact with the man nicknamed 'Terminator', yet Clattenburg refused to wipe off the suspension.

His only other game officiating Town was the 1-1 draw with Wimbledon in 2001.

Joining the Tyne & Wear offical in green will be Dave McCallum and Andy Nicholson.
