The former England midfielder was linked with the job with the Royals as soon as Alan Pardew walked out to join West Ham last month.

Coppell will now take charge of Reading in time for their game with Gillingham next week.

Coppell admitted it was hard to leave the South coast outfit but is looking forward to his new job.

"I am excited by the prospect of taking Reading forward, but anxious about the responsibility," Coppell said.

"I am also sad to leave Brighton. It's such a good club, so I have mixed emotions."
