Boulding has already attracted interest from Gillingham this month, although that seems to have died down with the Gills signing Patrick Agyemanh from Wimbledon.

The speculation brought to light Boulding's £45,000 release clause if the bid was made from a higher division.

Fry is now on Boulding's trail and wants to pair him with Paul Groves' summer target Clive Platt.

The Posh manager made a bid for Boulding 10 days ago for £50,000, which was turned down.

Fry is to carry on chasing and may wait until the summer when Boulding is out of contract, although he admits he faces a heavy battle to snap up the 13 goal man.

"It was 50 grand up front and I would have given them a percentage of a sell-on," Fry told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"Some of my directors spoke to the Grimsby directors when they were down here.

"I got hold of the Grimsby chairman and made a bid and they turned it down. That is the end of it for now.

"If they come and phone me up and say they'd accept what I'd offered then it would be back on. But I can't up my offer. I can't do nothing.

"I've brought Clive Platt in but he's a different sort of player. When I've seen Boulding he's quick and a good finisher and would be ideal to play with Platty.

"I had a bit of money because I sold Leon McKenzie (to Norwich) but obviously most of that had to go back into the club."

Fry will renew his interest when Boulding's contract runs out in the summer.

"I'll try and talk to the boy and his agent in the summer. But then the problem is that I'll be in an auction and I don't win too many of those!

"I think Boulding is a quality player but, if I'd got over the hurdle with Grimsby, I think I still might have had another one to jump with the lad and his wages."
