Tom Newey: Man Of The Match!
Scunthorpe United had to finish The Mariners of in a pot luck penalty shootout in which The Iron won 4-2. Town were without 1st choice keeper Steve Mildenhall and he was replaced by Chester City trialist Wayne Brown who stepped in front of reserve keeper John Lukic for the fixture.

Glen Downey also missed the game through injury. Town played John McDermott at right back with new signing Tom Newy making his debut at left back, Simon Ramsden and Tony Crane were at centre back with Rob Jones just in front of them. Former Iron midfielder Terry Barwick was given an unexpected go from the start in midfield along side Andy Parkinson on the left and also Paul Bolland. Michael Reddy and Martin Gritton started of up front for Town.

John Lukic, Justin Whittle and Gary Cohen were on the bench as was Huddersfield trialist Lee Fowler and Ciaran Toner fresh that day from singing a years deal with the club. Jermaine Palmer was not involved, nor was trialists Wayne Graves, Alex Hay, Lee Thompson, Karl Colley, Antoine, Yamoo or Jean-Paul Kamudimba.

Town missed several chance in the game one of them was a clear cut close range miss by Michael Reddy, who looked lacking in enthusiasm, Newey looked sharp and made good space to apply a cross that John McDermott narrowly missed. Scunthorpe had the ball in the back of the net but Crosby was ruled out for offisde. Scunthorpe looked very handy going forward but found it hard work up against Tony Crane especially. Crane's perfect timing challenge on Steve Torpey ended up in a yellow card after Torpey made the mistake if lunging at the clubs resident nutter, and as per usual Mr Crane did not let him get away with it . Andy Crosby was also booked in the incident however oddly Torpey came away clean.

Town brougt on Gary Cohen for Gritton, and the Gretna striker looked very strong , holding the ball up well, but flash backs of Darren Mansaram made me wonder. Lee Fowler and Ciaran Toner were also introduced into the gamer and both looked very eager to impress.

With the game ended goaless after normal time both team took to a penalty shootout. Lee Fowler missed for The Mariners at the first attempt, and United's Andy Crosby then converted to make it 1-0. Tom Newey took then what was the best penalty of them all with a confident spot kick, Andy Parton however put the ball back in Scunthorpe's court converting to make it 2-1. Michael Reddy then scored, as did United new boy Tommy Johnson. And it was always coming, Andy Parkinson failed to convert Town's 4th penalty and Matt Sparrow finished the job of to give Scunthorpe the victory on penalties.
