The Scottish youngster, who has made three appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's side this season, has turned down the offer of playing in the First Division and Paul Groves is set to turn his attention elsewhere.

Stewart is the latest player to turn down the Mariners after Sunderland striker John Oster rejected a similar offer from player-boss Paul Groves last week.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Manchester United defender Michael Stewart is the latest player to say no to a loan move to Blundell Park.

"It is thought a deal had been struck with United but the player himself decided against a move."
