Crane: Smashes Penalty Miles Wide!
A low attendance of 1,131 witnessed Grimsby Town exit the LDV Vans Trophy to Conference side Morecambe. The Mariners rested John McDermott, Tom Newey, Rob Jones, Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala, Paul Bolland, Michael Reddy, Andy Parkinson and Gary Jones from the regular bunch and introduced many of the other squad members along with some brand new ones.

In a dull game which saw Morecambe take the lead in the 46th minute, Town really did not look sharp..........I was about to say like the side who beat Cheltenham 3-0 on friday......but I have realised there was only 4 players involved in that game who played tonight.

The Mariners reverted to 3 at the back with Tony Crane, Simon Ramsden and Justin Whittle playing, Nick Heggarty, Ciaran Toner, Gary Cohen and Terry Barwick made up midfield, while trialist Steve Slade and Martin Gritton played up front.

Youngsters Paul Ashton, Danny North, Miles Chamberlain and Ben Higgins were on the bench and they were joined by reserve striker Jermaine Palmer frsh from his loan spells at Scarborough and York City.

Young midfielder Paul Ashton equalised for Grimsby in the 67th minute after Morecambe had earlier scored to go ahead in the 46th minute.

After no team could make a break through the game went on to penalties, where Simon Ramsden, Martin Gritton and Ciaran Toner all scored there penalties, but then the two players who are strongly being put down as the clubs lathargic donkeys Terry Barwick and Tony Crane both missed theres. Barwick's was hit straight at the keeper while Crane's was blazed miles wide.
