'New boy' Macca ready for return

Club captain McDermott missed all of the pre-season resulting in virtually a new team around him when he returns to the first team. This has left McDermott admitting he feels like a new boy, but is keen to play with his new team mates.

"I feel like a new boy and I haven't really done anything with the new lads," the 34-year-old told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"The lads have done well and they've found their feet and are starting to gel.

"I'm sure there's still a lot more to come from them all and there is competition for places now.

"There's more experience in my position than there was before. But I've got nothing to prove to anybody.

"I've got to bide my time and, when I get the chance, I've got to keep people out. I'm pretty confident I can do that and you have to be.

"The lads who are in there are there on merit and they feel like they can go anywhere and get a result. That's a great feeling to have around the club."

Having come through 60 minutes of Wednesday's reserve fixture against York, Macca is more than likely to start at Ashton Gate, a place he admits is tough to get anything but not out of the teams means.

"I don't see why we can't go there and get a point or three," he continued. They will be up there at the end of the season.

"Of all the teams that we've played up to now, this will be the toughest. They are going to be up there.

"They're totally different to the sides we've played so far because they play good football."
