Santos in Watford talks

Santos won the Player of the Year last season, despite not joing the club on a permanent basis until December of that season.

His rock solid performances in defence were not enough to keep Town in the first division, but he did cement his place as a fans favourite.

Despite Paul Groves' wishes for Santos to sign a new contract last summer, the Frenchman opted for a three-month contract with Ipswich, which later turned into a two-year deal.

Now less than halfway through that deal, another move could be on the cards. Santos' place in the Tractor Boys is in doubt as fellow central defenders have jumped above him in the pecking order. Boss Joe Royle has given permission to Watford boss Ray Lewington to open talks about a free transfer switch.

"We have given Watford clearance to talk to Georges about them taking over the remainder of his contract," Royle told the Ipswich website.
"We have five central defenders at the Club and with young Aidan Collins and Gerard Nash pushing through as well, we have more than enough cover in that area of the pitch.

"It's a good chance for Georges to hold down a regular first-team place but the decision is his and if he decides to stay, he will be welcomed back into the squad and be in contention to play like everyone else here."

Whilst talks continue between Santos and Watford, the player is set to feature for Ipswich's second string on Wednesday evening against none other than Watford as he continues his recovery from a broken nose.
