McDermott and Mike Edwards were the only players with considerable experience in the Mariners line-up.

Macca took his usual berth at right-back with Edwards, Kirk Wheeler and Greg Young in the other defensive positions. Andy Pettinger was in goal.

The game itself was one by goals from Chris Bolder, Liam Nimmo and Mark Newton. The brought even more headaches for Groves though with Darren Mansaram and Chris Bolder both suffering knocks, Giovanni Carchedi was knocked unconscious but later came round at hospital.

If Mansaram does not recover in time for Saturday, Groves will have just three strikers to pick from (Boulding, Ten Heuvel and Rowan). Liam Nimmo could well be rewarded for his goal with a place in the team.

The knock to Chris Bolder is also a concern with the suspension of Marcel Cas, Iain Anderson and Des Hamilton stretching the midfield. Ash Hildred, Iain Ward and Graham Hockless will fancy their chances of travelling to Bristol.

McDermott managed 60 minutes before tiring. His return could not come at a better time. With the impressive Cas suspended, Jason Crowe is likely to move onto the right-wing with McDermott in defence. If the 34-year-old fails to make the Bristol game, Wes Parker and Mike Edwards will battle it out to start.

Town:Pettinger, McDermott, Edwards, Young, Wheeler, Ward, Hildred, Bolder, Hockless, Mansaram, Carchedi. Subs: Hughes, Parker, Nimmo, Newton, Hyams.
