Two years for Young

The signing of the two-year contract stops a worrying trend of one-year contracts for Town's promising youngsters in recent years.

The 21-year-old impressed when he got a chance last season, either at left back or centre back. So much so that other clubs, Hartlepool included, were interested in the strapping defender.

Upon his appointment as manager Russell Slade stated he only wanted players who wanted to play and battle for the club, Young's comments certainly match up with Slade's blueprint.

"I am really pleased to get things sorted out," Young told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"Grimsby Town gave me my first real chance in league football and this is where I want to be.

"To sign for two years is fantastic - it can only improve my game even more.

"Even after the nightmare of relegation last year, I wanted to stay a Mariner.

"I am very happy and settled here in Grimsby and I want to play for Grimsby Town.

"I met with the manager soon after he arrived and he has impressed me a lot.

"He is very sure in which direction he wants to take the club and his enthusiasm is great.

"I had a chat about his plans for the team and I was delighted to hear that he wanted me to be a part of it. Now I can't wait to get back into pre-season training and get down to work."

With Slade likely to ditch the 4-4-2 system in favour of a three man defence, Young could prove a first choice with a shortage of left footed centrebacks around.
