However, Ashley Westwood and Clayton Donaldson sealed matters despite Carl Martin seeing red for a late challenge on Michael Leary.

A dejected Woods said: "I'm very disappointed. We lacked intensity, we never closed people down and our ball retention was poor. It was a poor performance and I think we have missed a chance to push on from our good result on Saturday.

"It's not an excuse but it was clear that too many of our players aren't capable of playing two games in four days. I'm not passing the buck but it boils down to what wasn't done in pre-season so when the going gets tough the players have no fitness to call upon."

Woods added: "We got out of jail by going in at 2-2 but I hate to admit the best team won and we need to regroup ready for the next game if we are going to survive."
