The former Sheffield Wednesday defender was a first team regular in the second half of last season and turned in a number of impressive performances.

Fears have arose that Hartlepool were keen to sign Young but Slade is now confident that he will stay at Blundell Park.

Slade is also hoping on retaining Graham Hockless, having put forward an improved contract offer to the talented midfielder.

Another person on Slade's hitlist is player of the year Phil Jevons. The 13-goal winger/striker will have to take a large paycut to stay at Blundell Park but may still find Town's offer the best he'll get.

The former Scarborough boss is hopeful that some new faces will arrive at the club this week, as he gets his squad together for the assult on Division Three.

"I would think that there will be some news on the new player front this week for sure," Slade told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"I am close to tying up a couple of players and talking with several others.

"I have also spoken with Graham Rodger about those who were here last year and we are very close to securing the services of Greg Young for next season.

"I am waiting to speak with both Phil Jevons and Graham Hockless - but Graham has been offered a slight increase on his first offer and I'm waiting to hear from him.

"It is a busy time as we look at players who have been released and others who I feel would help us next year.

"There are a few out there who I have identified but it's a case of getting them tied up as soon as possible so we are ready for the new season."
