Phil Jevons was given a chance to impress in his first game back at Blundell Park for over a year. David Soames was picked ahead of Darren Mansaram to partner Jevons.

In midfield Graham Hockless returned after his cameo's for the first team, on the other flank Iain Anderson continued his return to full fitness. Chris Bolder and Ash Hildred provided the central berths

Kirk Wheeler and Greg Young resumed their defensive partnership after Wheeler's short trial at Scarborough last week. Iain Ward and Wes Parker played the full back roles with Andy Pettinger between the sticks.

Scunthorpe too fielded a strong side with Tom Evans, Mark Jackson, Ian Kilford, Wayne Graves and Paul Hayes first team regulars.

Both sides tried to play neat attacking play but the blustery conditions prevented that from happening.

Scunny took the lead after 15 minutes, poor defending from Town left Paul Hayes unmarked from a free-kick. The ex-Norwich man nodded past Pettinger with ease from 6 yards.

Town responded with some neat clever football, that in fairness never really got anywhere. Hockless and Hildred were linking up well down the left with Soames and Anderson on the right also proving effective.

Neither Jevons or Soames were prepared to play the target man role, leaving Town often missing up front. Both naturally drop deep and the partnership will need work if it is to succeed.

The teams went in at half-time with Scunny the deserving leaders, Town had much of the better play but their organisation was not up to that of their opponents.

The second half was a different story with Town the much better side.

Clever play from Anderson and Parker allowed Phil Jevons the chance on the turn, his shot crept wide of Evans' goal as Town began to take control.

A fine through ball from Hockless released Soames who used his pace to escape McCombe and Jackson but hesitated on rounding Evans and lost the ball.

Jevons was replaced by Mansaram with 10 minutes remaining, despite Soames looking the more tired of the frontman.

The decision to keep Soames on proved a good one two minutes later, Hockless danced his way through the defence before bringing a fine save from Evans. Soames was on hand to slam home the rebound in style to level the game.

Evans' messed up goal kick almost cost his team the game late on. Hockless picked the loose ball out 45 yards and only the wind prevented his lob from embarassing the goalkeeper.

Overall the draw was a fair result in difficult conditions.
