New Grimsby manager Nicky Law now knows the size of the job he has taken on after his side crashed 3-0 at Wrexham, their sixth away defeat in a row.

Three goals in as many minutes sank the Mariners before half-time and there was no way they could claw themselves back into the game.

Law said he would be working hard in defence in the coming weeks and might have to look for players to strengthen his side.

He said: "Wrexham got to us far too easily. When we got the ball we couldn't keep it and we looked a very flat side. Our defence was so poor that they could have driven a London bus through the middle." From the home camp an elated manager Denis Smith was happy with the result but disappointed with the low turn-out as the game attracted another poor attendance.

He said: "It was worth coming just for the goals. They were superb. I said at half-time if we could keep a clean sheet I would have a good weekend." He gave special praise for midfield pair Jim Whitley and 19-year-old Matt Crowell. The teenager scored his first League goal and carried the Sponsors prize as Man of the Match.

He opened the scoring with a superb left-foot shot bent inside the top left corner from 20 yards after Whitley played him through.

Two minutes later, Chris Armstrong ran on to a flick from Darren Ferguson, stepped past goalkeeper Andrew Pettinger and stabbed his shot home.

And 58 seconds later, he scored again. This time Pettinger dived and got his hands to the shot as Armstrong met a cross from Chris Llewellyn but the ball squirmed under him and rolled into the net.

Grimsby have now conceded 23 goals in six away games.

And they nearly had another marked against them when Ferguson put Armstrong clear, but Pettinger was off his line quickly to make a diving save.

Des Hamilton hit an early shot over Wrexham's crossbar and Nick Daws smashed a 30-yarder straight into the grateful arms of goalkeeper Andy Dibble.

A later shot from Campbell hit the crossbar and bounced down for Dibble to collect.
